Cultural Context
Designed by Sir David Adjaye of Adjaye Associates and opened in 2015, ALÁRA's nine-metre volume of suspended platforms and a rooftop gallery was built specifically to curate West African design, fashion, and art under one roof — the building itself is part of the argument for African luxury retail.
Editorial Angle
Reni Folawiyo built ALÁRA to give the continent's talent pool, in Adjaye's words, a visibility it had lacked — establishing a contemporary visual language for African luxury that other concept stores across the region now measure themselves against.
